VALUING GOD’S WORD
It is now February as I write this Newsletter. I have left snow, ice and cold weather behind in New England. I have just arrived in Florida and as I sit at my desk in my motel room, with weather outside 83 degrees, I am preparing for 4 weeks of meetings and God laid this thought on my heart in my devotion this morning. The Value of His Word…
So my question to you is this…How Much Is Your Bible Worth. Now, I am not asking how much your Bible cost you…because that is not important. The question that I asked is How Much Is Your Bible Worth? The way that you value God’s Word pretty much reveals the kind of Christian you really are.
As I travel all across the United States and Canada, I’ve met so many Christians who make it clear that they don’t read or study their Bible. Therefore, they don’t know their Bible. In other words they don’t value God’s Word very much.
The psalmist valued God’s Word above gold and silver, even above the rich spoils of war. By the way, there’s a suggestion in Psalm 119:162 that we do battle before we claim the spoils of God’s Word. Bible Study demands the courage and discipline of a soldier! The psalmist would rather discover the treasures of God’s Word than the treasures of Kings.
It is really too bad that Achan did not have this same attitude. Unfortunately he preferred Material Treasures to Spiritual Treasures. He decided to have the ungodly spoils of war instead of the Holy Words of the Lord. The result was disastrous, both for him and his nation.
I see so many Christians leave their Bibles at Church until they go the next time or leave it in their car. Their Bibles are not worth very much because they carry their Bibles to Church but do not make it a daily practice to fellowship with God through His Divine Word and Prayer. And their lives show it because also in this day and age we have more discouraged, defeated and sinning Christians who do not faithfully fellowship with God nor find His Word Valuable. We place more value on making money, buying things to satisfy our covetness in order to fulfill our lustful desires all at the great cost of losing our families, and homes. We turn our backs on God because we think we can run our lives without His Wisdom and Guidance. Churches have replaced Holiness with programs and entertainment instead of True Worship. Church is not the place we go to have a good time. It is the one place we go and set aside a special time to Worship God in Spirit and in Truth.
Notice in Joshua 8:2 that God permitted Israel to take the spoils from Ai. Had Achan valued God’s Word above the spoils and waited another day, he would have enjoyed all the riches his tent could hold. It reminds me of Matthew 6:33. “But Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Too many Christians today are seeking after things and things have become gods in their lives because they are the number one priority in their lives. Second place goes to the Kingdom of God which is Salvation. They place things more important than their Salvation. Then the winner of the last spot goes to His righteousness conforming us to a holy walk into His Image.
When we do not place our desires in their proper order, defeat is certain. Seeking the Kingdom of God [Salvation] must be more important and be first in our lives and this should lead us to walk after God and allow His Righteousness to conform you into His Son’s Image. Thirdly, if God and Salvation are first and Righteousness and Holy Living are second then the things that we desire will be things the God desires for our lives.
It is in the everyday decisions of a man’s life that he discovers the true value of his Christian life. The man who lies or cheats to make himself a success, instead of Obeying The Word And Trusting The Lord, clearly proves what his values are. He values money and self-pleasure and things above God’s Word.
HOW MUCH IS YOUR BIBLE WORTH?
May your Bible, this year, become the most valuable treasure that you own. May God continue to have His divine hand upon your lives and ministries is my prayer.
